The Ritz-Carlton® Strategy for Environmental Responsibility

Sustain. Protect. Experience.

These are the guiding principles of The Ritz-Carlton Environmental Responsibility strategy. We are focused on integrating environmental sustainability throughout our business, including architecture and construction, hotel operations, and procurement. Our goals include:

  • further reducing energy and water consumption*
  • increasing local and organic dining options by partnering with local farmers, growers and seafood purveyors;
  • sourcing environmentally preferred products;
  • creating green construction standards for our hotel developers;
  • engaging and inspiring our employees and guests in conservation efforts;
  • addressing environmental challenges through innovative conservation initiatives including rainforest protection and water conservation.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company is deploying a global program to calculate carbon footprint, water footprint, waste diversion, and energy intensity at each individual hotel. This will allow meeting professionals to quantify the environmental footprint for overnight stays and meetings.

We ensure the guest experience reflects our commitment to environmental responsibility through multiple avenues, including our linen and terry refresh program and our Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary managed golf courses. Our partnership with Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment offers guests a meaningful experience that imbues them with a deep appreciation and respect for nature, as well as an understanding of how to live more environmentally responsibly back home.

*  The original reduction goal, set in 2007, was revised in 2012 to align with the methodology and metrics agreed upon as the hospitality industry’s standard for calculating and reporting emissions. The methodology and metrics were based on GHG Protocol standards. The new reduction target for energy is 20 percent per kWh/conditioned m2; the reduction target for water is 20 percent per occupied room. We participated in the Carbon Measurement Working Group -- a coalition of global hospitality companies, Greenview Consulting, the International Tourism Partnership (ITP), the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), and KPMG -- to devise this unified methodology and set of metrics based on available data.
