Falling in Love with … New Year’s in Hong Kong

A feast for every sense, Chinese New Year is the time to enjoy Hong Kong at its most ebulliently authentic

The New Year’s Flower Market is a giddy sea of people, frothing with chrysanthemum blossoms (to ensure hardiness) and scented with peonies (to ensure wealth). As night falls across the harbor in Kowloon, Hong Kong wears a rainbow of modern colors at its ballyhooed annual New Year’s parade. Horses cross the finish line at Sha Tin Racecourse, where residents come to test their New Year’s luck. Inflatable dragons, ornate lion dancers and marching bands in blinding hues try to outdo each at the New Year’s parade. A young resident throws an orange into the wishing tree in Lam Tsuen, outside of Hong Kong.
