With more than 1,400 rooms, the baroque Schönbrunn Palace overlooks the city and sets its majestic tone. (Photographs by Lisa Limer) The Fernwärme Wien, a heating plant, was designed by Vienna’s iconoclast architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The immaculately preserved Café Savoy attracts locals and tourists for morning coffee and late-night drinks. The maze at Schönbrunn is part of the palace’s magnificent gardens, laid out in formal French style. Vienna’s Café Central prepares the singular “Klimt pastry,” whose design is inspired by one of the city’s most famous artists. A gloriously detailed ceiling is one of the reasons the Austrian National Library is considered among the world’s most beautiful. The Anchor Clock, a classic example of art nouveau design, is situated on the oldest square of Vienna, the Hoher Markt.
