(Photographs by Lisa Limer) Artist Rebecca Horn’s 1992 sculpture “L’Estel Ferit” is a stack of metal cubes that pays tribute to the beach shack restaurants that once littered Barceloneta Beach. The inner courtyard of Barcelona Cathedral has housed white geese since the Roman era. The Gothic Quarter, or Barri Gotic, just off La Rambla, is an enchanting maze of winding streets, leafy plazas and colorful street life. The observation tower at Las Arenas, a former bullfighting ring turned shopping mall, offers panoramic views of the city below. Sagrada Família is the masterpiece of Barcelona’s defining architect, Antoni Gaudí. The interior features a stunning vault-and-pillar construction unique to Gaudí. The rooftop of Casa Batlló, another of Gaudí’s celebrated structure, provides visitors with an abundance of delightful shapes, undulating lines and interesting shadow effects. The Palau de la Música Catalana, completed in 1908, is one of Barcelona’s modernist masterpieces, and a center for Catalan culture.
