Liwa Date Festival

Held each year in July, the Liwa Date Festival promotes and celebrates the symbolic and historic role that the date palm plays in Emirati culture. The festival revolves around the date competition, in which Emirati farms vie for the title of best date grower. Prizes are given away for the top dates in each category and there is a live date auction where some dates sell for over an astonishing AED 6,000 (US$ 1,650) per kilo! The festival is open to all visitors, and is an incredible way to experience Emirati culture up close.

The Holy Month of Ramadan

The Holy Month of Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and is a time of fasting, prayer, and community. Families rise before the sun and observe the pre-dawn meal, ‘Suhoor’, and then observe the fast until ‘Iftar’, the fast breaking meal at sunset which commences with the eating of dates.

One of the most important aspects of Ramadan is ‘Zakat’, a certain percentage of one’s income that is donated to charity or to the needy, which along with ‘Sadaqa’, voluntary service, fulfills one’s obligations to the community and to the less fortunate. One of the best examples of this is at The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, where Iftar meals are distributed to the over 150 thousand people who gather to pray together.

In Abu Dhabi, those who wish to feel a part of the spirit of Ramadan can partake In Iftar meals offered all over the city, or participate in Ramadan volunteer programs, such as those offered by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural understanding.

Eid- al- Fitr

The holy month of Ramadan culminates with the three-day Eid-Al-Fitr holiday celebrating the end of the fast. Marked by a special morning prayer, Eid is a form of spiritual graduation and a chance to permanently implement the spiritual lessons learnt throughout the month and thus establishing the spiritual ground-work for the days yet to come. Muslims dress in their best and visit friends and relatives as a sense of community prevails. Abu Dhabi gets into the festive mood for Eid-Al-Fitr with various city wide celebrations, including concerts at ADNEC, traditional dances, and fireworks on the Corniche.
