Currency
- The Chinese currency is the Renminbi (RMB), or people's money. The basic unit, the yuan, is divided into 10 jiao. The jiao is again divided into 10 fen.
- 1 yuan = 10 jiao = 100 fen
- In spoken Chinese the yuan is referred to as the kuai and the jiao is referred to as the mao.
- The following yuan notes are issued 100, 50, 10, 5, 2 and 1.
- The jiao comes in denominations of 5, 2 and 1.
- 1USD is equivalent to RMB8.
Visas
All visitors to China require a valid passport and visa. Visas must be arranged beforehand through your nearest Chinese embassy.
Language
Chinese Mandarin is the official language in China. But people living in different parts of China also have their own dialects, some of which are closely related to Mandarin: whereas the others are quite different.
Beijing Standard Time
Beijing Standard Time (BST) is observed in mainland China. Although Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan have their own local times respectively called Hong Kong Time (HKT), Macau Standard Time and Taiwan Standard Time (TST), they are essentially the same as Beijing Standard Time. The time is based on a line of longitude at 120° east, eight hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and thirteen hours ahead of New York Time.
Electricity
Voltage in China is 220V 50 Hz. Power sockets available in China are Type A, Type I, and Type C plugs. We recommend buying travel power adapters that have these plugs.
Public Holidays
The Spring Festival (usually in January or February), National Day (October 1), and International Labor's Day (May 1) are the three busiest tourist periods. For the three holidays, three public holidays are given, together with two weekends makes a week for the Chinese to relax. In addition, the traditional celebration for Spring Festival is for people away from home to rush back for a family reunion. There are many marvelous and interesting activities during the Spring Festival.
Airport
The Ritz-Carlton, Beijing ideally located 40 minutes from Beijing Capital International Airport (35 kilometers/22 miles).
Suggested transportation into the city from the airport:
- Airport Taxi:
Do make sure you proceed directly to the legitimate taxi queue outside the Arrival Hall. The line is usually quite long but taxis move quickly so you won't wait long. At the head of the line a dispatcher will give you your taxi's number, which is useful in case of complaints. The fare will be at least RMB100 but pay according to the meter, which includes an expressway toll of RMB15. After 11 p.m., there will be a surcharge.
- Airport Shuttle:
The airport shuttle runs every 30 minutes from 5.30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and cover different routes. The cost is approximately RMB16. The bus stops at certain places in the city and you can continue to other destination in the city by taxi.
- Hotel Airport Pick-up:
The best and easiest way is to go by hotel airport transfers. When making a hotel reservation, be sure to arrange for an airport pick-up from the airport.
Taxis
- It's very easy to hail a taxi anywhere in Beijing. The starting fare for a taxi in Beijing is RMB10. The bridge and road tolls will be paid by passengers.
- For a journey that takes longer than 10 kilometers or running after 11 p.m., there will be a surcharge. Ensure that the driver starts the meter.
- You can ask for a receipt which will have the number of the taxi printed on it. This handy in case of complaint.
- Most drivers do not speak and/or understand English, so ensure that you have your destination written in Chinese beforehand.
Subway
- The subway runs every 5-15 minutes daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- The fare is RMB2 per ride for any distance.
- Subway entrances are shown on city maps. Each station usually has four entrances. The entrances can be identified by a large blue sign with letters BD inside a circle.
- If you still can not find it, you may ask a Chinese for the "di tie.”
