Referred to as The Queen City, Charlotte was named after the wife of King George III of England. During the American Revolution, the British General Cornwallis referred to Charlotte as “a hornet’s nest of rebellion” after his army was driven out by the local residents.
After the discovery of gold in the area dwindled out in the 1800s, due to the California Gold Rush, Charlotte prospered as a cotton processing center and railroad hub after the Civil War. Charlotte banked its way into the modern world and became the second largest banking headquarters in the United States after New York.
The city is also caters to the American motorsports industry, home to icons such as NASCAR. Charlotte is experiencing a renaissance, the result of remarkable growth in the last decade, and offers numerous new residences, restaurants, bars and clubs ready to entertain locals and visitors alike.
