Each summer, the Festival activates more than 25 indoor and outdoor locations in the neighborhood with an unparalleled collection of music, dance, theater, visual art, film, and participatory experiences by renowned and breakout artists from New York City and beyond. Giving Back with the Battery Conservancy
June 2013 - Available every Tuesday
This is a great opportunity to get your hands in soil and learn about perennial gardens and general garden care – and experience the best harbor views in town. From March through November, The Battery Conservancy’s horticulture team of four professionals works with volunteers on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon in The Battery’s gardens. Volunteer activities include operations like “Beautifying The Battery” by cleaning and beautifying the park and lawns or “Paint the Best Seats in Town” by painting and oiling Battery benches. Guests participating in the activity are encouraged to wear clothing that can get dirty as well as sturdy footwear.

Children must be ten or older. All children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

Reservations: 48 hours advance reservation required.

Governors Island Swim
Saturday, July 20, 2013; 11:30 a.m.
Cheer on swimmers—or sign up ahead of time at www.nycswim.org to join them—as they jump off a ferry boat and swim a challenging two-mile race around Governors Island. The course allows great views of Lower Manhattan, Jersey City, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and, of course, Governors Island itself, from the unique, water-level perspective.

Giving Back with the Battery Conservancy - Battery Urban Farm
July 20, 2013
Plant. Weed. Prep.

Dig in the soil with The Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park’s Executive Chef, James Dangler, and volunteer with the Battery Urban Farm! Assist with weeding, seeding, transplanting and selling the fresh organic vegetables at the farm stand. Vegetables that are not sold at the farm stand are donated to a Food Pantry by The Battery Conservancy.

Battery Urban Farm is a one acre educational farm, located in the historic Battery just steps away from The Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park. The turkey-shaped farm is home to over 80 varieties of organically-grown vegetables, fruits, flowers, grains, and companion plants. This family friendly volunteer opportunity is offered the third Saturday of the month (May-September) with volunteer harvest hours from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. Volunteers under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

All volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes and weather appropriate clothing.

Reservations: 72 hours advance reservation required.

Summer Streets
August 4,11, 18, 2013
For three Saturdays in August, the sounds of honking horns and idling engines will be replaced with contented sighs and the cling-cling of bicycle bells on select streets throughout the City. From 7am to 1pm, and from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, Park Avenue and connecting streets will be closed to traffic and open to the public for anything from biking to strolling to dancing. Summer Streets events are great for your health (and the earth's), so check them out.
