Discover the Mangroves

Saturday, November 22, 2008
Adult $155, Child $95
You can help conserve and protect vital mangrove habitats on St. Thomas by preparing mangrove propagules or transplanting juvenile mangroves.

There’s more to the U.S.V.I.’s beauty than diaphanous turquoise seas, colorful flowers, pristine beaches and sunlit skies. An important part of the tropical environment is the lush mangrove, which thrives in saline coastal habitats and protects the islands from erosion and storm surges, and provides safe haven for underwater life in its submerged roots. You can take part in efforts to conserve and preserve the islands’ habitat. Your day begins with a tour of the mangrove and salt pond to learn how the ecosystems function. Following the tour, you will board the Lady Lynsey for a sail to Coral World to work in the mangrove nursery either planting propagules or transplanting juvenile mangroves.
