GUANGZHOU, China – January 17, 2017The Ritz-Carlton, Guangzhou is pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas Laberer as the hotel’s new Executive Chef. German-born Chef Thomas will oversee the culinary operations in all food and beverage outlets, along with the hotel’s catering and in-room dining.

Born in Nuremberg, a historical city in south Germany, Thomas has over 30 years’ of experience as a chef. Prior to his recent appointment, he was the Executive Chef at The Hamilton Princess Hotel & Beach Club in Bermuda, a Fairmont managed hotel.

As a young boy, Thomas discovered his passion and talent for food when helping and learning in his grandmother’s kitchen during weekends. In the early days of his career, he trained and worked at well-established Michelin restaurants in France, Switzerland, UK and also at “The Aubergine Restaurant’ in Munich. He ventures around the globe and this added essential experiences to his career. Thomas worked and traveled across several cities over four continents including Cape Town, Johannesburg, Singapore, Mumbai, Istanbul and Beijing. Thomas has eight years of prior work experience in China, working for well-known hotels in Shanghai and Beijing until 2014. On several occasions, Thomas was leading the kitchen brigades catering for high profile politicians and head of state functions.

“My family and I are very excited to be back to China. Since my first arrival to China in January 1998, I developed a very strong attachment with this country, the people, culture and all these very interesting and unique ingredients, materials and cooking styles”, Chef Thomas said. He is thrilled to showcase his talent and experience at The Ritz-Carlton, Guangzhou. “Guangzhou is well known as the ‘gastronomic capital’ and I am confident that it will give boundless culinary inspiration.  I believe it is very important to always keep the freshness of the ingredients to create a memorable dining experience for our discerning guests.

Thomas is certified with a German Master’s Chef’s Degree and he has taken part in several international culinary competitions. 

Thomas enjoys wining & dining apart from reenergizing himself with outdoor activities like cycling, hiking and mountain climbing.
