SHANGHAI, CHINA - January 9, 2017. Having served Marriott International guests and properties on five continents across more than 30 years in the hospitality industry, Mr. Andrew Houghton brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role as the General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong.

Having first joined Marriott International in London in 1986, Houghton took on his first General Manager’s role in Saudi Arabia back in 1998. His most recent post as Area Vice President, Caribbean and Latin America, Marriott International saw him managing and developing 13 different properties across 5 brands including JW Marriott, Marriott, Renaissance, Autograph Collection, and Courtyard, where he led a string of above expectations improvements.

Prior to that, Houghton had previous roles as Brand Executive at Marriott International Headquarters in the USA, a General Manager position at the JW Marriott Hotel, Mirage City Golf Club, Cairo, as well as a previous stint in Shanghai as General Manager of JW Marriott Hotel and Marriott Executive Apartments.

Born in Birmingham near Cambridge in the United Kingdom, Houghton began his hotelier’s career with a vocational training course in Hotel and Catering Institutional Management in Cambridge, and earned his spurs as a junior employee gaining experience of hotel operations as a waiter, receptionist and front of house manager. A golfing interest took Houghton to Scotland, where he worked at prestigious golfing hotels at both the home of golf, St Andrews, and on Perthshire’s Gleneagles Estate.

A theme throughout Houghton’s career has been exploring the needs of guests and developing new products and offerings to meet the ever evolving requirements of modern travelers. He also has a sustained track record of building progressive collaborative working relationships between international hotel teams and local owners and communities.

Mr. Houghton succeeds Mr. Rainer Burkle who, following 7 years as General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong and also serving as Regional Vice President, Mainland China, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, has been promoted to Area Vice President, Luxury,  Greater China, Marriott Internationals. In Mr. Burkle’s new role, he will be responsible for the overall success of Marriott International’s luxury brands in Greater China. He will oversee the opening and positioning of new luxury hotels within the region, and will drive performance and service quality across the organization. His exciting new portfolio includes the following brands: The Ritz-Carlton, The Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Edition, St Regis, The Luxury Collection and W Hotels.
