SHANGHAI, CHINA – December 6, 2016 – Lighting up the holidays with festive spirit, The Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai rings in the season of merriment with a special Blues Christmas for family and friends to enjoy.

Inspired by the rich history of Blues music, The Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai’s Blues Christmas fulfills guests’ dreams with a “Santa Claus” who grant your wishes, warm memories at the legendary Ritz-Carlton afternoon tea, Blues inspired cocktails, fanciful goodies and cookies, chocolate milk snowmen, and also a perfect Christmas dinner at Portman’s.

Giving back to those in need is an essential part of spreading the Christmas cheer. This year, underprivileged children from migrant families and schools will benefit from an initiative specially organized by the Ladies and Gentlemen of the hotel. A huge “wish list” will be presented at the front door of The Ritz Bar & Lounge, giving guests an opportunity to donate and help make children’s dreams come true.

The Ritz Bar & Lounge manager and mixologist Jackael has created a variety of different cocktails inspired by some of the greatest blues musicians that have ever lived, paying tribute to B.B. King, Albert King, and Freddie King, who are known as “the three kings of blues guitar.”

Other renowned musicians include Muddy Waters, “the father of modern Chicago Blues”; Robert Johnson, “the guy that sold his soul to the Devil to play the Blues”; and Howlin’ Wolf, “a guy so big with a voice so loud he both blew away and terrified his fans.” The Blues cocktail is inspired by the stories of these four renowned blues musicians, so that their stories and legacy may live on in spirit.

B.B., Albert, and Freddie King were often mentioned together as the Three Kings of Blues Guitar. Each artist displayed very distinctive and widely influential styles. “The Three Kings of Blues Guitar” cocktail pays tribute to these individuals, and is freshly reinvented with a mix of Añejo rum, fresh lime juice, honey syrup, and Prosecco for a sweet and sour taste.

Growing up on Stovall Plantation, the man who becomes known as Muddy Waters later got his nickname from his grandmother because he enjoyed playing in the muddy waters of nearby Deer Creek. At the height of his career, people considered him to be one of the greatest of his craft. His skill was considered to transcend the genre and influenced others such as rock & roll and jazz. The “Muddy Waters” cocktail is mixed with reposado tequila, and presents a juxtaposed taste between sweet and bitter.

Ninety years ago, a young man living on a plantation in rural Mississippi had a dream to become the greatest blues musician of his age. According to legend, he was instructed to bring his guitar to a nearby crossroads at midnight, where he made a “deal with the devil” to achieve his dreams.  This man we now know as Robert Leroy Johnson and is one of the most important blues musicians ever. The “Robert Johnson” cocktail is a vitalizing mix of Gin and fresh orange juice.

The Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai also offers magnificent seafood this season. The current Canadian lobsters will be replaced with French blue lobsters throughout the month of December, as they boast an attractive blue color and are extremely rare.

Starting from December 8th, 2016 The Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai redefines the traditional afternoon tea experience at The Ritz Bar & Lounge. Presented by Executive Sous Chef Bradley together with Pastry Chef Harry, the culinary team aims to elevate the tea experience for guests with premium ingredients, enhanced by leading brands such as Bollinger and Valrhona.

Presented in three courses, succulent Canadian oysters and Bollinger champagne will be served in the first course to whet the appetite. For the third course, a Valrhona caraibe pudding and Valrhona jivara truffle bar will be served.
