Sintra – September, 2016 – Penha Longa Resort in Portugal has raised €500 towards fire-fighting equipment following the devastating summer fires that raged across the country.

The historic resort is surrounded by 220-hectares of stunning National Park and from July to September around 150 firefighters and dozens of fire-trucks from the Sintra Fire Station were on constant 24 hour-standby, close to Penha Longa to respond immediately to any potential blaze.

Fortunately, there were no major incidents nearby, but throughout the summer other areas of Portugal suffered badly, with hundreds of wildfires. In the first two weeks of August alone, an area of 115,000 hectares, twice the area that is usually destroyed by fire in a year, was devastated.

“For many years we have supported the firefighters who are stationed close to the resort every summer and the money we have raised is a small token of our appreciation for the demanding work they have to do,” said David Martinez, General Manager at Penha Longa Resort. “Every year Portugal suffers from summer wildfires, but this year was particularly devastating”.
