Sintra – April, 2017 – Penha Longa Resort is celebrating the welcome return of its famous Italian classic — Il Mercato.
The popular restaurant officially reopens on April 5 after being completely refurbished. Now under the direction of Portuguese Chef Paulo Pedro, Il Mercato enjoys a stunning new menu of seasonal Italian favourites with fresh ingredients sourced from the culinary heartlands of Italy.
“Il Mercato has always enjoyed a reputation for classic Italian food, but following the refurbishment we have created a restaurant ambience that is indulgent, intimate and stylish with a focus on unforgettable flavours,” said the resort’s General Manager David Martinez.
“Penha Longa has long been seen as sanctuary of tranquility in the heart of the Sintra Mountains’ national park and was the favoured summer retreat of the Portuguese Royal family centuries ago, but in recent years the resort has become recognised as a destination of gastronomic excellence.”
The new Il Mercato joins a formidable group of resort restaurants. LAB by Sergi Arola was recently awarded a Michelin Star for its culinary innovation; Midori is renowned for its cutting-edge Japanese cuisine; Arola continues to impress diners with its creative tapas and trendy atmosphere and Villa Tamariz Utopia is regarded as the epitome of barefoot luxury overlooking the glamorous Estoril coast.
At Il Mercato the story of Italy’s astonishing culinary legacy is told through distinctive seasonal dishes. Shrimp Risotto with ginger and lime, Lemon and Chili Linguine with prawn Bolognese, Lobster Ravioli and Veal Parpadelle with Portobello mushroom share pride of place on the menu with classic Siciliana, Margarita and Formaggio pizzas as well as meat and fish dishes such a Lamb Loin, Roasted Duck, Sea Bass and Cod.
Portuguese Chef Paulo Pedro, who learned the art of gastronomy as a child from his grandmother and mother, comes to Il Mercato after honing his passion for Italian cuisine at Michelin-starred restaurants in the nearby capital city of Lisbon.
“At Il Mercato my aim is to celebrate the best of Italy using the best quality fresh seasonal ingredients from the best regions,” he says. “As well as ensuring our classic dishes are remembered for their unforgettable flavours, we will be working to create new pizza, fresh pasta and risotto recipes for those who appreciate a little culinary adventure. I like to call it Italian cuisine with Portuguese soul.”
