Vienna, August 2017 – Vienna is the only European capital where wine is grown within the city boundaries. This highly unique and interesting wine culture can be experienced during autumn with a memorable walk through the vividly coloured vineyards offering beautiful views over the city. The “Buschenschanken”, typical wine taverns along the way provide for a refreshment and recreation after the hike, with hearty food and a glass of wine. When the leaves of the trees try to trump each other with different nuances of yellow, green and red, the Austrian Wine Season starts. The tradition had his origin in 1784, when the Emperor Franz Joseph II allowed the vintners to sell their produces from their own cultivation together with their wine for the first time. Until today the rustic taverns belong to the Viennese way of life and belong to a visit to Vienna in autumn.

To contribute to this great culture, The Ritz-Carlton, Vienna offers its guests not only a red and a white house wine to be tasted in the restaurants and bars in the hotel, but it also offers two special house wine tours. During a wine cellar tour, a wine tasting and a picnic between the vines or a visit to a wine tavern, the Viennese wine culture can be discovered at first hand. The Ritz-Carlton, Vienna leaves nothing to be desired for unforgettable autumn experiences.

Exclusive House Wine
The wine culture is a very special one in Vienna and only few know about the broad variety of terroirs and grapes grown within the vineyards of Austria. The Ritz-Carlton, Vienna, naturally, wants to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge and the preservation of the traditional wine-growing areas and has now created its own red and white house wine in collaboration with two wineries. Guests can now try the “2012 Hausmarke – Schubertring 5”, a red cuvée made from Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc grapes or the “2016 Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC Ried Gollin”, which consists of a mix of Viennese grapes, all grown in one single vineyard.

On the footsteps of the red house wine
The red house wine is grown in the state of “Burgenland”, in the east of Austria. Guests of  The Ritz-Carlton, Vienna can visit the winery J. Heinrich by the winemaker Silvia Heinrich. During this exciting tour guests can discover the wine cellar, participate in a wine tasting and picnic in the vineyard. Optionally, guests can dive even deeper into the Austrian wine culture and visit the heart of the 38 hectare large vine area, the vineyard location “Goldberg”, with scenic views over the entire area.

Discover the white house wine
The white house wine is grown directly in Vienna by the winemakers of the winery “Weingut Fritz Wieninger & Weingut Hajszan Neumann”, which is a family-run business. Guests will be greeted by the vintner and shown through the winery and wine cellar. Afterwards, guests can participate in a small or large wine tasting including the house wine and then visit the “Buschenschank am Nussberg”, which offers absolutely stunning views over Vienna. Both House Wine Tours are half day tours and can be booked up until two days in advance with our dedicated Concierges.
