AMELIA ISLAND, FLA. (December 4, 2015) The World’s Largest Gingerbread Pirate Ship is on display at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The S.S. Ginger Amelia is a tribute to the legends and lore of historic Amelia Island, ruled briefly by Privateer Luis Aury in the early 19th century. The design is inspired by Aury’s vessel, The Mexican Congress. The 17 foot ship is docked in the lobby of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island through the holiday season.
A crew of eight Ritz-Carlton pastry chefs logs 350 man hours to prepare over 600 pieces of baked gingerbread. Through its Community Footprints Program, the hotel reaches out to high school students interested in culinary careers to help build the ship. The students rub colored sugar powder and paint coffee extracts on the freshly baked gingerbread for a wood grain look while the chefs create gingerbread cargo boxes and treasure chests. Chocolate cannon balls and a treasure chest of sweets compliment the gingerbread creations.
The ship is manned with a crew of ten engaging nautical characters, adding another dimension of fun to the creation. The characters are the work of an overnight pastry chef who sculpts and details each crew member with individual pieces of color fondant. All the while, he preps and bakes croissants, muffins and the resort’s popular sticky buns for breakfast. Each character takes a week to design, sculpt and layer with fondant. Executive Pastry Chef Sheldon Millett describes the process as “a labor of love and a work of art.”
This holiday season the resort is offering a Holiday Lights Bed & Breakfast Package with a private balcony overlooking the sparkling 40 foot Christmas Tree. The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island offers a holiday package that includes a coastal view room facing the Christmas Tree, Breakfast for Two and complimentary valet parking. The offer is valid November 22, 2015 - January 2, 2016, based upon availability. Rates start at $279 per night.
