Wolfsburg, August 29, 2016 – A signal shot and the well-known call: On your marks! Get Set! Go! herald the start of the dragon boat race tournament, when, for the 16th time, teams from all over the World compete in different races for The Ritz-Carlton Cup at the Autostadt in Wolfsburg. Adorned in imaginative costumes, 60 teams, with a total of 1500 athletes, compete for six different trophies and the ultimate prize, The Ritz-Carlton Cup. In the end the teams MHP Grisu and DieEinTakter-Actic Fitness won The Ritz-Carlton Cup in a spectacular relay race, while the other teams won prizes in six different categories, from newcomer to creativity.

The races started on Saturday with time trials for the different cups and commenced in earnest on Sunday with the awakening of the dragon. At this traditional ceremony, the eyes of the dragon puppet are handpainted in order to bring luck and success to the following competition. A colorful supporting program for teams and families alike, and the summery atmosphere at Autostadt, the world’s leading automotive destination, perfectly rounded off one of the biggest water sport events in Lower Saxony, Germany.

Besides MHP Grisu and DieEinTakter-Actic Fitness winning The Ritz-Carlton Cup, the following teams won in their class the following cups: Speedform Dragons (Sports cup), Komponenten SPEED Halle 2 (Fun cup), Autostadt Drachenboot Team (Newcomer cup), Die Wasserträger (Vision cup), Audi Shark- ányok (Global cup), Die Wasserträger (Strategy cup). In addition to the sporting competition, special attention was paid to the originality of the team costumes. The team showcasing the most innovative and inspired outfits was chosen by a panel of judges and won a personal team prize, together with the Creativity Cup. The winning team can now also look forward to an overnight outing to the Cologne Carnival 2017, giving them the opportunity to exhibit their triumphant costumes for a second time.

The dragon boat race is now an established date in the diary for both sports enthusiasts and those simply looking for some lighthearted summer fun with the family. In addition to the sporting challenges, a multitude of children’s activities, as well as an extensive selection of different food and drink offerings, combined to create a brilliant weekend of entertainment. And, of course, the After Race Party with live music lasted long into the night.
