Yoshi Brings Award-Wining Taste to the Resort Ahead of Grand Dining Renovation Reveal

KAPALUA, MAUI, HI – February 2018The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua – the recently renovated luxury Maui resort – congratulates its talented Executive Pastry Chef Yoshikazu “Yoshi” Kizu and the USA team for placing among the top five teams in the 8th Edition of the Gelato World Cup. Yoshi was selected to be the designated pastry chef for the team of five which represented the entire country during this highly competitive international culinary event. For four days, beginning January 21, 2018, Yoshi and his fellow teammates competed in eight major challenges against highly skilled teams from countries around the world, earning the United States its highest ranking in the history of the competition.

Professionals compete amid the largest international trade show dedicated to the highest-quality gelato, pastry, bakery, and coffee artisans. Located in Italy’s Rimini Expo Centre, the Gelato World Cup showcases the world’s best of the best in these industries. Each of the 12 selected national teams were comprised of an executive chef, pastry chef, gelato master, ice sculptor, and a team manager. In addition to Yoshi, the USA team consisted of strong players, including Team Manager Chef Randy Torres, Gold Medalist of the 2008 Cooking Olympics, Gelato Maker Stefano Biasini, Executive Chef Lyn Wells, and Ice Sculptor Chris Foltz. Teams completed daily challenges to demonstrate technical and artistic excellence, while tying each piece of work to a chosen theme. Team USA’s ‘Urban Legend: Area 51’ theme was incorporated into the Cup’s challenges, from gelato to pastry, high cuisine, and ice and nougat sculptures.

“I’m extremely proud of Team USA’s performance during the Gelato World Cup and am honored to have been given the opportunity to compete,” says Yoshi Kizu, Executive Pastry Chef of The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. “It was a very positive experience overall, although stressful, challenging, and tough at times. In the end, I felt a sense of great achievement, both personally and professionally.”
