Muscat, Oman, October 12th 2016 - Six of Muscat’s leading hotels partner for a solidarity cause on the occasion of the Global World Food Day, celebrated across the world on October 16th .

Teams from the Crowne Plaza, Shangri-La, InterContinental Muscat, Holiday Inn Muscat Al Seeb, Sheraton Oman and Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel, joined hands for the first time to organize such a large-scaled hotel charity event in Muscat, with the aim of giving back to their communities.

Volunteers from each hotel have taken part in a fun challenge race at LuLu Hypermarket in Darsait this morning, in order to collect as much dry goods as possible and distribute them to local communities. Six teams - representing each hotel - have competed in the 10-minutes race through the hypermarket and collect items from a shopping list.

To finance this project, a total of OMR 2960.00 was collected by the the hotels through different fund-raising initiatives run by each property in the past weeks, and the funds were divided among each team before the race.

« All hotels have their own Corporate Social Responsibility programmes in place, but this project is really unique in that it brings us all together in a common cause. This initiative reflects our common grounds and values as responsible businesses. When it comes to supporting our communities in Muscat, we are all committed, together.», states Katrin Herz, General Manager at Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

The hotel teams expressed their appreciation to Lulu Hypermarket officials for the contribution to the food race and the purchase of supplies.

« We are delighted to be part of this charity initiative and have the opportunity to come together with Muscat hotels to serve our community», says Mr. Shabeer K.A, Regional Director LuLu Hypermarkets – Oman.

Starting tomorrow, hotel teams will organize food drives across the city and distribute food bags to disadvantaged communities, tying further bonds with their neighborhoods. Dar Al Atta and Al Rahma Charity will support the distribution through their networks.

About World Food Day

World Food Day is annually held on October 16th to commemorate the founding of the United Nations' (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945. This global commemoration carries a different theme each year,  in 2016 it is Climate Change: "Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too". One of the biggest issues related to climate change is food security. The world’s poorest - many of whom are farmers, fishers and pastoralists - are being hit hardest by higher temperatures and an increasing frequency in weather-related disasters. World Food Day is about Zero Hunger - a Global Goal for the world to achieve together. We have 15 years to end hunger for every child, women and man around the world. Reaching it will save countless lives and build brighter futures for us all.
