Planning Your Trip

Come to Puerto Rico for the warm ocean breezes, long walks on the beach, lush natural surroundings — like the property’s historic Rockefeller Nature Trail — and perhaps an excursion on the water. With all this outdoor adventure to be had, it’s important to pack thoughtfully to make the most of every minute.

Beach Vacation

While there is so much to see in Puerto Rico, simply relaxing at the palm-fringed beach and taking in views of the Atlantic or spending days enjoying the property’s pools.

  • Pack a couple of bathing suits to take advantage of the infinity-edge Positivo pool or to splash around with the family in the kids’ pools at the Encanto Beach Club.
  • A light sarong will come in handy as a swimsuit cover-up or as a thin layer if the ocean breezes carry a bit of a chill.
  • The sun is quite strong, particularly in summer, so be sure to pack protective layers like a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Resort Essentials

Intersperse time spent relaxing waterfront with a few of the exciting activities on offer. From tennis to fine dining, there is so much to do without ever leaving the resort.

  • Kids of all ages will love the Watermill waterpark and its 30-foot water slides, wave pool and more. Pack a bathing suit, flip-flops and sun protection.
  • Bring your tennis whites and your racket (though complimentary rackets are also available for rent) for a match or two on one of the property’s five Har-Tru clay courts. Or brush up on your game with a private lesson from one of the three pros.
  • While bathing suits and flip-flops are practically the resort-wide dress code, for a dinner at COA or Encanto Beach Club Bar and Grill, bathing suits and sleeveless T-shirts are not permitted (and at COA men’s shorts and flip-flops are also not permitted), so pack accordingly.

Outdoor Adventure

There are true adventures to be had and exploring to be done in Puerto Rico — and one of the most unique offerings, the Rockefeller Nature Trail, is right on the property.

  • A comfortable pair of walking shoes — sandals or closed toe — will ensure you enjoy the Rockefeller Nature Trail’s 11-mile path through forests and hidden coves.
  • For one of the many day trips from the resort, a lightweight backpack or tote is useful for packing water bottles and additional sun protection.
  • While the weather is generally warm and humid, a light layer is always a wise addition if the temperature dips in the shade of the rainforest canopy or there’s a bit of a refreshing chill from the indoor air conditioning.

Don’t Forget:

Consider packing a pair of binoculars and a camera to bird-watch while strolling on the Rockefeller Nature Trail.

There’s something for every kind of traveler at Dorado Beach. From fine dining at exclusive restaurants to daylong excursions to sacred archaeological sites, the hardest part of any visit may be whittling down the list of activities to pursue between relaxing by the pool and taking long walks on the beach.

Outdoor Excursions

Looking to get out on the water? Learn to kite surf, sail or windsurf with Goodwinds — a program designed by Olympic windsurfer and co-owner Karla Barrera and her husband, Phil Morstad. Or take a relaxing paddle board tour of the coast of Dorado Beach. Surf lessons are also available for children as young as 4 years old. To learn more about Puerto Rico’s natural wonders, enroll in the Ambassadors of the Environment at Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. With programs for all ages, the whole family can enjoy activities like snorkeling, hiking and exploring an on-property archaeological site.

Dining Reservations

Although many delicious dining experiences are to be had in Puerto Rico, while at the resort make a point of reserving a dinner table at Mi Casa by José Andrés for elevated farm-to-table cuisine like a steamed bun with Guavate-style pork belly and chayote mojo or dishes incorporating the famed jamón Ibérico and unique rum varieties, and the Encanto Beach Club Bar and Grill for freshly grilled seafood and a spectacular raw bar every Friday evening.

Spa Appointments

Nestled in a fragrant pineapple grove, the resort’s spa is the perfect place to spend a couple of hours or an entire day. Book one of the spa’s signature alfresco treatments like the Coffee & Clove Scrub to exfoliate and revitalize skin, the Spa Botanico Apothecary Ritual in which guests create a custom botanical blend to be used in a massage in a private pavilion, or the Hammock Massage in which guests receive a rhythmic massage and gentle stretching while swaying in an ocean-side hammock.

Day Trips

There is much to do just beyond the resort. Take a scenic drive to explore the central mountain region and visit Neolithic ruins to view the petroglyphs carved by the Taíno people, then enjoy a freshly cooked creole lunch next to Las Delicias Waterfall. Take a night excursion to experience the bioluminescent creatures living in the Laguna Grande while you paddle through the mangrove channels. Or explore underground with an eco-adventure that takes guests to caves and canyons fed by underground rivers.

Puerto Rico is one of the most picturesque destinations in the Caribbean, and no corner of the island is more jaw-droppingly beautiful than Dorado on the northern coast. The perfect place to unwind, Dorado offers worth-it excursions for outdoors enthusiasts of any age and fitness level. Explore mysterious caves, plan gorgeous tropical hikes or book a helicopter tour for a bird’s-eye view of paradise. And, of course, the pristine, white-sand beaches are only steps away when you book a stay at Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, which fades into the lush, natural environment.
