Tenerife – 9 November, 2017, The Ritz-Carlton, Abama in Tenerife, is renowned for offering an oasis of tranquility, just a short hop from the UK and basking under the year-round African sun enjoyed by the largest of the Canary Islands. For 2018, the glamorous European retreat continues to pamper but with a focus on banishing burnout, and helping us to reach the holy grail of sleeping hours. With 70% of the UK feeling they achieve below the recommended sleeping hours each night, recent research shows increasing links with sleep loss and serious illness and life expectancy.
The resort’s moorish inspired retreat, ensconced in lush tropical gardens high above the Atlantic waters, sets the scene for serious wind-down to kick start the ultimate ‘sleep hygiene’. A serene programme has been sensitively crafted considering key elements of environment, and incorporating complementary spa treatments, fitness, and tailored menus to re-set mind, body and soul and encourage nourishing sleeping patterns.
Guests will check-in to the resort’s secluded adult-only Tagor’ Villas, greeted by a dedicated butler, setting them free from smart phones and tablets for the digital detox introduction. For three nights’ guests will enjoy the Villa’s generous sized living space designed in line with the resort’s commitment to ancient Chinese design philosophies and welcoming positive energy flow. Elegant interiors and grand marble bathrooms with indulgent Asprey amenities will inject pure lux, while each villa provides private pool access, and pool-side butler service on tap throughout the day.
The Tagor’ Villas are hidden bolt-holes inspired by the aboriginal Guanche people of the Canary Islands who cherished adult seclusion, creating peaceful areas set apart from their villages, where the elders of the tribe would meet to seek enlightenment and counsel. This area was named “Tagoror”.
During a four day programme, each morning starts at The Ritz-Carlton, Abama’s signature Roman Thermal Spa Circuit, where a sequence of water therapies expose the body to extremes of hot and cold in order to rebalance, release toxins and promote a natural immune response. Water treatments massage, stimulate energy channels, sooth, and balance the digestive system.
A fitness class is selected each day from Qigong in the tropical gardens, technical Pilates to ‘Fly Yoga’ in the resort’s Persian Garden – a 6th floor botanical oasis. Exploring, refining and advancing traditional asana, both in the air and on the ground, the inspired practice works with gravity to relax and realign the body, centre the mind and uplift the spirit. The al fresco classes, will stimulate a ‘yoga high’, encouraging physical release, refined strength, energetic flow, and heightened awareness of breath, body and bandhas.
At The Ritz-Carlton, Abama’s award-winning spa, the treatment of the day will incorporate practices to quiet the mind, release tension and stimulate deep relaxation for an uninterrupted night’s sleep. Incorporating The Ritz-Carlton’s massage mastery, guests will enjoy treatments including the ‘Lomi Lomi’ using movements of the forearm to enable deep relaxation and tailored to quieten anxiety and stress, and the Detox Slim & Fit to purify and boost circulation. The Hot Stone Massage, with black stones from the island’s magnificent El Teide volcano, works deep in to muscles to treat the nervous system.
While indulging at the destination’s world-famous Michelin restaurants may be tempting, the resort’s wellness team has designed a series of menus to replenish and nourish, working with sleep enhancing foods packed with proteins, serotonin, potassium and magnesium, available for lunch and dinner at selected restaurants. The island is after all home to one of the most potassium rich foods on the planet – the humble banana!
Encouraging a mindful journey, The Ritz-Carlton, Abama offers an easy transition from digital saturation where the average brain today consumes an overwhelming 34GB of content daily. For time out and perspective, the resort’s secluded beach, tranquil Persian Garden or the many peaceful nooks to be found in the tropical gardens complete with Koi Carp pool, will calm and centre the mind.
The Ritz-Carlton, Abama’s three-night Wellness Retreat starts from £2,305 per person and includes; three nights’ accommodation in a Tagor’ Villa with private pool and concierge service, a wellbeing welcome pack on arrival, daily spa and class programme, access to tailored menus and daily dining at a choice of; El Mirador, Txoko, Beach Club, Verona, Casa Club and Los Chozos restaurants.
