WASHINGON, D.C. (November 1, 2017) – The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C. has an annual holiday tradition of creating a massive edible gingerbread house inspired by local culture and history. This year, the Hotel is creating its most astonishing design yet – a 30 foot tall recreation of the Washington Monument at a .05 scale of the original. Led by the Hotel’s talented Executive Pastry Chef, John Quinn and his Pastry Team, the construction and creativity of the Gingerbread Monument has only one restriction (other than the height): the entire outer structure must be built of baked goods and candy.

“The most important part of the design is ensuring that it is an exact replica of the original Washington Monument situated just a few blocks from the hotel,” stated Executive Pastry Chef, John Quinn. “Some people may have noticed that about a third of the way up, the stones of The Washington Monument change a shade of color. This was due to a lack of funding which brought the project to a halt. When the construction re-started, the designers used marble from a different quarry resulting in a different color shade. We are ensuring details like this are accurately represented in our model.”

After an estimated 1,000 hours of pre-work, planning and building, the final replica will incorporate 900 pounds of icing, 600 pounds of white gingerbread sugar dough and be constructed with 251impressive layers of stacked gingerbread stones.

With its base secured on the lower level of the hotel, the Gingerbread Monument will span up 30 feet through the grand staircase with the pointed top of the obelisk-shaped structure coming through to the lobby level upstairs. The Gingerbread Monument will be complete with blinking red lights for air traffic control at the top, and 50 American flags circling the base.

The Gingerbread Monument is not the only way The Pastry Team of The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C. is bringing on the holiday cheer at the Hotel. They will also be pushing their bounds of creativity for the annual Chocolate Decadence Event on Saturday, December 9th at 8:00pm – a delightful haven for chocolate connaisseurs. Children may also join the Pastry Team on Sunday, December 10th at 3:00pm for the hotel’s annual Gingerbread House Decorating Class and learn the art of Gingerbread decorating while taking home their own designs (reservations are required).
