The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, DC is pleased to announce that they will be joined by The Residences of The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, DC, The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown, Washington, DC, The Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City, and The Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner to support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal #14: Life Below Water. Ladies & Gentlemen of the Hotels are proud to be participating in the Anacostia River Watershed Restoration Project to help improve conditions in the Anacostia River that runs by the nation’s capital.
Historically, the Anacostia River has been one of the most polluted rivers in the Chesapeake Bay. However, with the ongoing commitment of the Anacostia Watershed Society and the Ladies & Gentlemen of The Ritz-Carlton Hotels, the river’s health continues to improve by stopping new pollution, restoring natural systems, and rebuilding the communities’ connection the river.
Participation in the Anacostia River Watershed Restoration Project is a sustainable commitment that reflects the Hotels’ desire to support the community beyond fundraising. This project aids the natural production of oxygen, sequesters carbon dioxide, and mitigates the impact of storm water runoff, thus increasing the aesthetic value of Bladensburg Waterfront Park located on the river. Beneficiaries of this project will number in the thousands as living conditions in the area are improved.
The involvement of The Ritz-Carlton in the Anacostia Watershed Restoration Project aims to increase and enhance the area of good quality forests and wetlands by planting trees in the Bladensburg wetlands and collecting non-indigenous debris. Employee volunteers will also be consolidating a forested wetland riparian buffer; a tree covered swatch of land around the wetlands that reduces the impact of storm water runoff that enters the wetland from the surrounding areas.
Involvement in the Anacostia Watershed Restoration Project is part of The Ritz-Carlton social and environmental responsibility program, Community Footprints. Through Community Footprints, employee volunteers strive to make a difference by supporting efforts focused on child well-being; hunger and poverty relief; and environmental responsibility. As the first Founding Partner of Impact 2030, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company has an on-going commitment to advance the Global Goals through corporate volunteerism.
