Dubai is the second largest of the United Arab Emirates, but second to none in its eclectic compilation of distinctive landmarks, rich history and unique cultural opportunities. From the 1500s, there are records of Venetian pearl divers in Dubai and until the 1930s, the city was primarily known for its pearl exports.
Always an important stop on the trade routes to India, Dubai’s rulers have been champions of trade and commerce and managed to remain an independent emirate for most of the 19th and 20th centuries, even though it was under the protection of Britain. When Britain left the Persian Gulf in 1971, Dubai joined six of its neighbors to form the United Arab Emirates as we know them today. Garnering ever-increasing recognition for its expansive growth, open business climate and record-breaking architecture, Dubai is a luxurious desert playground and shopper’s paradise full of exciting possibilities.
