Maison Ruinart
March 4, 2015

For our March Phenomenal Femmes Dinner, we welcome Amélie Chatin, Winemaker for Maison Ruinart. It is from her father that she developed a passion for winetasting and which lead her to start studying agronomy. She later reoriented her studies to specialize in viticulture and winemaking, a decision made after having visited the first established champagne house, Ruinart.
After earning a degree in viticulture and œnology from the Ecole Nationale d'Agronomie de Montpellier in 2007, Chatin left for Argentina, at Bodegas Chandon, where she worked as a winemaker and discovered the wines of the New World. Upon her return to France, she worked briefly at Moët & Chandon in the experimental winery, trying the brand’s newest wine technology. Afterwards, she had an interesting one year experience in wine journalism, traveling frequently and speaking with different actors in the wine world (growers, winemakers, scientists…). After yet another winemaking exchange in upstate New York, USA, she joined the Maison Ruinart.

She has been working with Ruinart for two years and a half, alongside Frédéric Panaïotis, the Maison’s Cellar Master. She splits her time between doing research and development about Chardonnay grapes and Chardonnay wines, and communicating about the exceptional Ruinart Champagnes.

A 4-course dinner created by Chef Mark Arnao will be served with wine pairings by Wine Director Marika Vida-Arnold.

A percentage of all proceeds will benefit the Women’s Shelter at Crossroads Community Services at St. Bart’s church in NYC.

Tickets are $195 per person and seating is limited. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling (212) 521-6125 or by email Cathleen.browne@ritzcarlton.com

Pride Mountain Vineyards
April 15, 2015

Suzanne Pride Bryan: Owner

Suzanne graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and worked in management in San Francisco's financial district for 10 years before entering the Pride family wine business. Suzanne joined her parents full-time at the winery in 2003. Suzanne is married to Stuart Bryan, a 30-year veteran in wine sales. Stuart was instrumental in getting Pride Mountain Wines distributed on a national basis from the very first vintage in 1991, and continues to serve as Director of National Sales today.
Since 2004, Suzanne and her brother Steve have co-owned pride mountain vineyards once their mother, Carolyn pride retired. "It is fantastic to be second-generation owners and carry-forward our parents' vision. We are so blessed with the amazing fruit that grows on our mountain top and the talented team of people who make our winery and our wines so special," says Suzanne.

Sally Johnson: Winemaker

Sally's journey to the top of Spring Mountain was a windy one. Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, she was planning a career in the Biotech industry when she headed overseas for stints in Brittany and Paris, France to complete her college language requirements. While soaking up the Continental lifestyle, she became fascinated by the rich history of the wine industry, its connection to the seasons, and the craftsmanship involved in creating a distinctive cuvee. She returned home and completed a dual degree in French Literature and Biology at the University of Michigan, and her next step was to enroll in U.C. Davis's Master's Degree program in Enology. At Davis, her research centered on the effect of deficit irrigation on flavor development in Cabernet Sauvignon, leading to a passion for Cabernet Sauvignon that has blossomed during her winemaking career.

After leaving Davis, Sally joined the team at St Francis Winery & Vineyards in Sonoma County, CA, first as enologist and moving up to winemaker during her eight year tenure. She took a brief hiatus in 2002 to work a harvest at St Hallett Winery in Australia's Barossa Valley, returning to California with wine-stained hands, steel-toed Rossi work boots and an appreciation for old vine Shiraz and dry Riesling. She also made Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah under her own label for several years.

In 2007, Sally joined the team at Pride Mountain Vineyards. Having been a devotee of Pride wines for many years, she is thrilled to be charged with handcrafting our distinctive wines. "Pride has such an incredible site. The diversity of the soil types, our southern exposure and our block-by-block approach to managing 46 individual vineyard blocks within an 83-acre ranch all add up to fruit with awesome potential. My job is to coax out the expressive, extracted wines that are synonymous with Pride Mountain. It's a dream job!
