LANGKAWI, MALAYSIA - March 1, 2019 – The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi will go dark for one hour on March 30, 2019 to shine a light on climate action in support of Earth Hour 2019. The hotel will join millions around the world in turning off its lights at 8:30 p.m. local time to illuminate a powerful message about environmental awareness and action. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) created the annual global environmental awareness event 12 years ago to emphasize the threat of climate change.
The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi celebrates the diversity of life on earth by hosting a list of conservation activities suitable for all ages, from a photography contest for the Ladies and Gentlemen of The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi - capturing creative moments that best represents what #MIEarthHour means to them, to powering down all non-essential electricity on March 30, 2019, followed by a sixty minutes celebration with glow in the dark cocktails and an Oceanfront Street Food Night featuring low carbon menu items and live cooking stalls illuminated by one hundred tealight candles.
Prior to the candle-lit dining event, guests are invited to gather at our outdoor rainforest gym deck where soft light and soothing music will set the scene for a special candle-lit themed Hatha Yoga practice including meditation and pranayama - breathing exercises. And, for the young guests, a s’mores kit crafted around a campfire by the beach.
The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi will also participate in Marriott International’s drive to raise funds for WWF by sharing more ways to decrease our energy consumption across all of our social media handles and tagging #MIEarthHour #Serve360 in each post where USD 3 will be donated to WWF.
“Each year, we celebrate Earth Hour and are reminded of the importance this event has in bringing awareness to the pressing issues of climate change” said Denise Naguib, Vice President of Sustainability and Supplier Diversity. “We have a responsibility, and an opportunity to share this message with the millions of guests and associates through bringing Earth Hour to life tonight, and continuing the focus every day through our sustainability and social impact platform, Serve 360.”
