New Year's Eve Party at the Brandenburg Gate

Berlin celebrates its most spectacular and legendary New Year's Eve party each year around the Brandenburg Gate, as some one million visitors gather to christen the new year. The party extends for two kilometers under the open sky with multiple stages, party tents, food galore and light and laser productions. Then, exactly at midnight, Berliners and visitors welcome the new year with breath-taking fireworks, after which the party continues until the early morning hours.
The party takes place across the Tiergarten on Straße des 17. Juni between the Brandenburg Gate and the Siegessäule (Victory Column). An international programme of live music and entertainment ensures a good mood, as do the party tents and catering stalls.
The organisers estimate that more than a million people celebrate a peaceful start to the new year at the Brandenburg Gate. Numerous TV broadcasters from around the world report live from Berlin's biggest New Year's party and transmit the images to the different corners of the world.

In his second festival issue the artistic director Berno Odo Polzer will focus on “Time and the Digital Universe”. Special concert formats, contemporary positions in composition and installations form the festival.
The Berliner Festspiele will be hosting MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues from 11–20 March 2016. In his second edition, the artistic director Berno Odo Polzer will continue to focus on the phenomenon of time as a central artistic, political and social category of today. In concerts, installations, performances and discourse formats, the festival will open up spaces for experience and reflection that connect the temporality of the arts with current debates in the fields of computer science, philosophy, economy, and political and social sciences. “Time and the Digital Universe” is the topic of the two-day opening conference of “Thinking Together”, a theory-related format that will run from 12:00–18:00 at Haus der Berliner Festspiele.

“When I hear Wagner’s music, I always think of the sunrise from Nietzsche’s Zarathustra – the crescendo of colours, the epic naturalism, the illumination of a huge spirit. It sweeps you away, like great cinema,” avows Gustavo Dudamel, conductor of the concert at the Waldbühne. This is not the first time he will guest conduct at this event. Already in 2008, the Venezuelan conducted the Berlin Philharmonic’s traditional conclusion to the season, debuting with the orchestra at the same time. The concert of Spanish and Latin American music was entitled Los ritmos de la noche, and delighted not only the audience but also the press. The event may well go down – the critic from the Tagespiegel wrote – as the coolest conducting debut in the history of the Philharmoniker.
