Planning Your Trip

Wolfsburg, a city in Germany’s Lower Saxony state, is a car lover’s paradise. But even if you aren’t, it is hard not to be impressed by the industrial and architectural feats of this town. Below, a packing guide for your trip.

Exploring the City

Autostadt, a massive theme park dedicated to automobiles, and Phaeno, a science center designed by Zaha Hadid, are some of the must-see attractions around town, along with medieval castles and an internationally recognized contemporary art museum.

  • Wolfsburg enjoys all four seasons, with warm summers and cold winters. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics for the former, and pile on the layers and knits for the latter.
  • It also rains frequently — bring a waterproof jacket and umbrella.
  • Prepare to do a lot of walking. Comfortable sneakers and flat sandals or boots are your best bet.

Day Trips

Berlin, Hanover and Hamburg are just some of the cities that are close enough for fun, interesting and culturally fulfilling day trips. Pack the essentials you’ll need for long days of sightseeing.

  • Bring a camera. German cities are all beautiful in their unique way, and so is the scenic countryside between them.
  • A lightweight backpack or tote will help you fit what you’ll need for the day — water, guidebooks, sunscreen and a portable charger.
  • Pack layers to accommodate changes in temperature. Especially in the summers, don’t forget a sweater for air-conditioned indoors.

Spa Retreat

You can easily make a perfect vacation spending most of your time in the hotel’s elegant and sprawling spa. It also doesn’t hurt that there’s a three-Michelin-starred restaurant inside the hotel, the perfect complement to a day of relaxation.

  • Pack a selection of casual layers and workout clothes to take advantage of the many amenities.
  • Don’t forget your swimsuit and flip-flops in summer. For a lazy afternoon poolside, bring along a book or two.
  • Have an elegant business casual outfit on hand for your dinner reservations.

DON'T FORGET:

Your journeys around Wolfsburg and any trips you decide to take to cities like Berlin or Hamburg will surely result in lots of souvenirs and gifts for those back home. Bring an extra foldable carry-on to avoid running out of space.

While primarily known for being the home of Volkswagen Group, Wolfsburg is much more than a haven for automobile enthusiasts. You’ll also find excellent cuisine, buzz-worthy contemporary art and well-preserved castles. Plus, it’s perfectly situated for day trips to nearby German cities. Below are some suggestions to add to your itinerary.

Dining Reservations

Place Setting

An exceptional dining experience awaits you at restaurant Aqua, which was ranked with three stars by the Michelin Guide and was awarded 19.5 points by the current Gault Millau. Chef Sven Elverfeld sources his ingredients from northern Germany to create a modern European tasting menu. For something a little more casual, book a table at Terra, where the focus is also on farm-to-table fare and the wine list features biodynamic German vintages. Afterward, head to Newman’s Bar for a nightcap. Elsewhere in the city, Trattoria Incontri is a popular choice for great Italian food, while the best Vietnamese options are found at An Nam.

Spa Appointments

Towel

Take a break from sightseeing and replenish your energy at The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Wolfsburg. Book the signature treatment, the four-hand massage, and let the synchronized techniques of two therapists relieve tension and aching muscles. Get the works with the Rose Crystal Lymphatic Facial, a luxurious experience that includes an enzyme peel, a honey-jasmine mask and a collagen boost. Then end your day of pampering with a dip in the floating pool, which remarkably stays at a temperature of 84 degrees Fahrenheit year-round.

Museum Tickets & Cultural Sights

Referred to as Germany’s biggest walk-in sculpture, the Phaeno, designed by the late Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid, is equally impressive on the inside, which has over 300 interactive science exhibits. Of course, you can’t miss the Autostadt, a theme park-cum-museum complex where you can get up close to Bugattis, Porsches and Lamborghinis, take a tour through the Volkswagen factory, and drive around a track. For those looking for something more artsy, there’s the Kunstmuseum, an internationally recognized modern and contemporary museum that has mounted exhibitions of masters like Alberto Giacometti, Fernand Léger, Frank Stella and James Turrell.

Day Trips

Hanover, the capital city of Lower Saxony, is just an hour from Wolfsburg but its Gothic architecture and charming old town will make you feel worlds away. Pay a visit to the ornamental Herrenhausen Gardens, which have been around since the 17th century, and take pictures in front of the ornate and castle-like New Town Hall. To the east of Wolfsburg is Germany’s capital, Berlin, with its symbolic Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Wall memorial, wonderful galleries and cool hipster vibes. And to the north is Hamburg, home of the magnificent Elbphilharmonie concert hall, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and one of the most acoustically advanced halls in the world.

The Volkswagen Group plays an important role in the city of Wolfsburg. What was once a 20th-century experiment in urban planning has become a world-class destination for auto enthusiasts and savvy travelers looking for a uniquely German adventure. The fifth-largest city in Lower Saxony proves an industrial infrastructure does not denote a lack of culture — in this case, it’s quite the opposite. With more sprawling public green spaces than nearly any other city in Europe and a plethora of museums to explore, these itineraries will help you uncover the best things to do in this wordly city.

Perfect Weekend

Unlike most German cities, Wolfsburg is anchored not by a medieval town square, but by Volkswagen’s world headquarters. Because of this unique foundation, the community embodies the ideas of mobility and forward motion, as illustrated by the numerous science museums and modern art exhibitions. There’s no shortage of Michelin-starred restaurants and relaxing spa treatments to choose from either. In Wolfsburg, you’ll discover a city laden with innovative technology and Old World charm, creating the perfect off-the-beaten-path adventure for the modern traveler.
