Sustainability & Community Engagement
At The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and supporting our local community. Set at Khor Al Maqta’a, near the Maqta Conservation Area - the historic gateway between Abu Dhabi Island and the mainland - we recognise the cultural and environmental significance of the surrounding waterway. Our approach brings together responsible energy and water management, food-waste prevention, thoughtful sourcing and opportunities for guests and Ladies and Gentlemen to participate. Supported by property-specific systems and operating records, these initiatives strengthen asset resilience by informing preventive maintenance, improving resource management and helping essential systems remain reliable as operating conditions evolve. Enjoy our Grand Canal setting, Venetian-inspired architecture and views of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque while knowing your stay is responsibly managed.
Our on-site vertical farms connect responsible sourcing with the guest dining experience. Selected herbs and greens are grown at the hotel for use by our culinary teams, supporting thoughtful menu planning and a closer connection between what we grow and what we serve.
By using thermodynamic solar technology to support the hotel’s hot-water system, we integrate renewable energy into daily operations while maintaining guest comfort. Engineering teams monitor performance over time as part of our broader approach to responsible energy management.
Our approximately 2,000-cubic-metre main pool uses a saltwater chlorination system that generates chlorine from dissolved salt, reducing the need for routine manual dosing of conventional chlorinating products. Careful monitoring of chlorine and pH helps maintain balanced water quality for guest comfort, while supporting the care, reliability and long-term resilience of this significant hotel asset.
Our on-site food digester uses microorganisms to mimic natural digestion, turning food waste into a liquid that is safely discharged through existing plumbing. Treating waste where it is created helps keep it out of garbage trucks and landfills, limit odours and pests, and reduce transport emissions. Real-time tracking supports informed decisions and more resilient operations.
Through our in-house water system, we desalinate and bottle our own still and sparkling water on site in reusable glass bottles for use across the hotel. Drinking-water refill stations provide further opportunities for guests and Ladies and Gentlemen to refill throughout the property. Together, these measures reduce reliance on single-use packaging and strengthen operational resilience.
ElephantSkin recyclable gloves are used in selected service areas where appropriate, combining operational and hygiene requirements with a more thoughtful approach to service materials. Their use supports our wider efforts to reduce reliance on disposable items while maintaining established service standards.
Bring your gathering to life with a sustainability plan shaped around your priorities. From locally sourced menus and thoughtful portion planning to agreed cooling parameters, more sustainable amenities and eligible surplus-food donation, our team supports each stage. Where data is available, post-event reporting provides insight into measured electricity and water use.
Join guests, event groups and Ladies and Gentlemen for scheduled beach clean-ups that bring our community together in support of Abu Dhabi’s coastline. Participation and collected waste are recorded to support transparent reporting and help guide future activities.
Grow, Harvest and Discover
Ask our team about scheduled vertical-garden experiences, where guests can help plant or harvest selected herbs and greens, learn how they are grown on site and discover how ingredients make their way from our garden to the plate.
