Sustainability & Community Engagement at The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama
Sustainability & Community Engagement
At The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and supporting the community in which we are located. The resort stands on the west coast of Tenerife, within a landscape of native flora, coastal birdlife and marine habitats, and is built into the natural fall of the hillside, with terraced gardens, ravines and shoreline retained across the estate. Certified by Biosphere and Green Key, we aim to use less energy and water, manage waste responsibly and protect the biodiversity we are part of. Enjoy the gardens, the cuisine and the Atlantic shoreline of Europe’s oasis of eternal summer, while knowing your stay is responsibly managed.
Our sustainability performance is reviewed independently under the Biosphere and Green Key certification schemes, covering energy, water, waste and biodiversity across the resort. The buildings are also certified under BREEAM, the assessment method for a sustainable built environment.
Working with the marine science organization Innoceana, we support the restoration of seagrass meadows along the Tenerife coastline. Seagrass stabilizes the seabed, shelters young fish and stores carbon, and its recovery is central to the health of the waters in front of the resort.
The estate is planted and managed to protect endemic Canarian species. Our grounds team maintains the botanical collection, the ravines and the coastal edge, keeping habitat open for the birdlife and pollinators that live across the property.
Our kitchens are built around seasonal Canarian produce, with Verde Mar working from a vegetable-forward, locally sourced menu. Buying on the island shortens the distance ingredients travel and keeps our cuisine connected to the growers, fishers and producers of Tenerife.
We aim to reduce the energy and water each stay requires, through efficient building systems and continuous monitoring across the resort. Verified carbon and water footprint figures for the property are published in the Sustainability Information section of this website.
Charging points for electric vehicles are available on site, subject to availability, for guests arriving by car or exploring Tenerife independently.
Our Experience Center hosts programming developed with Innoceana, introducing guests to the marine ecosystems of the Tenerife coast and the science behind their protection.
Across our restaurants, we prioritize locally sourced ingredients and work closely with trusted producers, growers and fishermen across Tenerife and the Canary Islands. These partnerships allow us to showcase the richness of the destination through fresh, seasonal products while supporting a more responsible and locally connected approach to dining.
Through Community Footprints, our Ladies and Gentlemen actively support Tenerife through initiatives including beach clean-ups, food drives, and assistance to local animal shelters. These actions strengthen our connection with the island and contribute to the wellbeing of the communities and environment we are proud to call home.
