The National Monument or "Monas" is one of many monuments built during the Soekarno era of fierce nationalism. The 137-meter marble obelisk is topped with a flame coated with 35 kg of gold and represents the people’s determination to achieve freedom.

Construction began in 1972 and it formally opened in 1975. The park occupies more than 100 hectares (around 250 acres) of land. Taman Mini is the brainchild of former First Lady Ibu Tien Soeharto.

There are various houses located on the property that represent the diversity of Indonesia. Each house contains traditional clothing, tools, instruments and other artifacts as well as souvenirs for sale.

The building that now houses the Fine Arts and Ceramics Museum was originally built in 1879 as a courthouse for the Dutch government. On August 20, 1976, it was re-commissioned as the Fine Arts and Ceramics Museum. The museum contains over 400 examples of fine art including sculptures, graphics, wood totems, sketches and painting batik.

Puppets (commonly known as wayang) were originally a product of Royal Court culture, used as an instrument of worship to the ancestors. The collections of Puppet Museum are wayang kulit, wayang golek, patung wayang, topeng wayang, wayang beber, wayang kaca and gamelan (musical instruments). The museum also displays various collections of wayang and dolls from other countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Suriname, China, Vietnam, France, India and Cambodia.

The National Museum is also known as Gedung Gajah (Elephant House) or Gedung Arca (House of Statues). Currently the National Museum has 109 collections and 342 objects falling into the categories of prehistory, archaeology, numismatics-heraldic, geography and historical relics.

The Jakarta Museum of History focuses on the city’s historical development. The collections are highly varied and encompass the heritage of the pre-historical period through the beginning of the 20th century.
