Ambassadors of the Environment by Jean-Michel Cousteau introduces children to the natural wonders and rich cultural traditions of the Cayman Islands. The islands’ ecological resources are a natural classroom and living laboratory in which families embark on eco-adventures. Through exploration and active study, Ambassadors have meaningful experiences that imbue them with a deep appreciation and respect for nature as well as an understanding of how to live more environmentally responsibly back home.
Ambassadors of the Environment by Jean-Michel Cousteau offers 42 exciting three-hour programs each week. The Ambassadors Heritage House serves as an example of green building as well as a showcase of traditional Caymanian culture.
Ambassadors of the Environment by Jean-Michel Cousteau also offers programs customized for adults and groups. For more information, please see our Recreation offerings.
Ambassadors Kids (Ages 4-7)
All About Butterflies Few places in the world offer a more in-depth view of butterflies. In an enclosed, outdoor, tropical garden, butterflies flutter around both flowers and us as we learn about the life cycle and natural history of these fascinating creatures. If we’re lucky, we may see a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis and taking its first flight.
Ambassadors in the Kitchen We are mixing it up in the Heritage House kitchen with an adventure in natural and organic cooking. Don your chef hat as we learn about baking techniques, kitchen safety and the ingredients that make up tasty concoctions. Whether using hand-crank blenders or the solar oven, the result is sure to be delicious.
Animal Olympics If animals competed in the Olympics, who would take home the gold medal? Why, those best adapted for survival of course. We will test our own abilities as humans in challenges that animals face in the wild. While hopping like kangaroos, swimming like sailfish, and climbing like geckos, we learn that for animals, physical fitness is more than fun and games - it's a matter of survival.
Challenges & Climbing Wall Gear up to climb the 28 ft. wall and with challenge by choice - you decide where to go next. As you learn climbing techniques, you may discover a new talent or you can fine tune your abilities to negotiate the variety of holds. Through a series of group initiatives and fun but challenging games, we develop communication skills and the ability to work as a team.
Cities Under The Sea Grand Cayman and the Caribbean Sea are home to many wonders that are invisible to the casual visitor. People are both connected to and dependent on the coral reef ecosystem that exists here. Cities Under The Sea offers glimpses into the hidden world below the surface and demonstrates our connections to the natural world.
Creatures of the Night We experience the heightened sensory awareness that comes from being outdoors at night, including sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell and intuition. We watch and learn how other species far surpass our limited abilities to function in the dark and become entranced by this other-world of mystery and beauty.
From Junk to Funk Every day the average American throws away 3.5 pounds of garbage. If lined up bumper to bumper, a string of garbage trucks hauling the nation’s daily waste would reach halfway to the moon. From Junk to Funk looks closely at each of the three R’s–reduce, reuse and recycle. We learn how we can have a positive impact on the world through our daily choices.
Fun with the Sun We learn how to use the sun to our advantage as we create our own solar prints with sun sensitive photo paper, become ultraviolet detectives with the help of UV beads and then enjoy a sweet treat that has been cooked in a solar oven.
Green Thumb Fun Throughout history each and every culture has used the plants of the local environment for their survival. We roll up our sleeves and commune with nature as we watch life sprout up from the earth in our organic garden. We learn eco-friendly methods to grow healthy food and keep our environment healthy, too.
Have You Ever Seen A Blue Iguana? Grand Cayman is home to the endemic and endangered Cayman Blue Iguana, found nowhere else in the world. We learn all about this fascinating species and the international efforts to save them, and we visit the blue iguanas at the breeding program at Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park. Afterwards we enjoy a picnic lunch and group games in the park’s beautiful gardens.
Life on the Edge of the Sea (ages 4 - 9) Islands are filled with creatures that live on land but must stay very close to the sea in order to survive. We visit a flourishing park perched on the ironshore and take a closer look at critters who call the tide pools home then explore the fanciful landscaping comprised entirely of indigenous plants.
Life’s a Beach Join us for discovery and excitement on Seven Mile Beach. We play cooperative games, explore the shoreline, use our underwater viewers to inspect the marine life and if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you’ll have the chance to try out snorkeling!
Mangrove Forest Pontoon Trip (ages 4 - 9) Mangroves are the forests of the sea. In this natural jungle-gym, strange roots extend into the water providing a nursery for reef creatures and marine birds. As we travel by pontoon boat in shallow protected waters we experience one of the strangest gardens on the planet – a wonderland of living, pulsating flowers - the world of the upside-down jellyfish, relatives of corals.
Sea Floor Submarine Adventure Experience the thrill of journeying beneath the sea in a real submarine. A technological marvel, the Atlantis XI Submarine was specifically designed for underwater sightseeing excursions. The spacious cabin is maintained at sea level pressure with no effect on the ears. The smooth ride and clarity of the water will amaze you as we explore Grand Cayman’s underwater marine park to depths of 100 feet and explore the mysterious deep reefs off Grand Cayman, discovering the shy and exotic creatures of this alien world.
Sea Turtle Discovery Lab Turtles have been swimming in the oceans for millions of years, but their future is now more uncertain than ever before. We draw upon engaging and educational multimedia resources created and compiled by Jean-Michel Cousteau’s team that provide unlimited opportunities to explore the lives of these amazing creatures. We even have the chance to track our two sponsored sea turtles “Ambassador” and “Murph” who are tagged as a part of the Cayman Islands Satellite Tracking Project.
Secrets of the Sand The beaches we stroll upon are seldom appreciated for what they really are. Each grain of sand is a tiny bit of history, reflecting its origin and forces that have brought it to this place. Ours will be an adventure of discovery as we explore this wonderland beneath our feet.
Starry Nights We learn how ancient navigators used the stars to make their way across uncharted seas to discover new lands and return home safely. A closer look through our telescope at those glowing balls of gas helps us understand what a star actually is. We explore such things as the great storm on Jupiter and the rings of Saturn.
The Case of the Missing Stingray Our stingray puppet has disappeared – and it is up to us to find it! We assume the role of private investigators as we learn the elements of mystery through a series of clues and challenges. In the process, we increase our awareness of the natural environment and all its wonders.
Traditional Caymanian Crafts In the years people have been living on Grand Cayman, a rich and unique culture has emerged. Led by a Caymanian artisan, children and adults alike will have an opportunity to learn about traditional arts and crafts using local natural materials. Participants will take away an authentic piece of Cayman as a memento.
Web of Life Life on Earth comes in a wild array of shapes and sizes. Different species live in different places and behave in wildly different ways. But despite their diversity, plants and animals need a lot of the same things to survive. In the web of life, every animal and every plant relies on other plants and animals. Web of Life reveals to us that, as conservationist John Muir said, “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.”
Ambassadors Youth (Ages 8+)
Challenges & Climbing Wall Gear up to climb the 28 ft. wall and with challenge by choice - you decide where to go next. As you learn climbing techniques, you may discover a new talent or you can fine tune your abilities to negotiate the variety of holds. Through a series of group initiatives and fun but challenging games, we develop communication skills and the ability to work as a team.
Creatures of the Night We experience the heightened sensory awareness that comes from being outdoors at night, including sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell and intuition. We watch and learn how other species far surpass our limited abilities to function in the dark and become entranced by this other-world of mystery and beauty.
Eco-Discovery We draw upon highly engaging, fun and educational audio/visual resources created by Jean-Michel Cousteau’s team. These unique resources provide unlimited opportunities to explore aspects of reefs and mangroves impossible to see during a short stay on Grand Cayman. We will glimpse into the micro-world of the reef where tiny creatures are far more bizarre than in the best science fiction.
Hobie Cat Sailing Climb aboard one of the Hobie catamarans for a wind swept adventure around the Caribbean waters off of Seven Mile Beach. We learn basic sailing terminology and techniques and even have a chance to help the captain sail the ship. We then have the opportunity to slip into the water for a snorkel to discover that coral reefs are like cities under the sea, full of life, mystery and beauty.
Lights, Camera, Take Action Part of being an Ambassador is spreading the word on how to live more sustainably back home and encouraging people to change their everyday behavior. Share your own ideas through a video production as we research, write, direct and star in our own public service announcements.
Mangrove Kayak Adventure (ages 10+) Mangroves are the forests of the sea. In this natural jungle-gym, strange roots extend into the water providing a nursery for reef creatures and marine birds. As we travel in double kayaks in shallow protected waters we experience one of the strangest gardens on the planet - the world of the upside-down jellyfish, relatives of corals.
Night Snorkel Nightlife in the coral city is as strange and different as it is in a human city. Many reef residents are nocturnal, never seen by snorkelers during the day. Many fish active during the day put on their pajamas (change color) and go to sleep on the reef at night. At night, many corals extend delicate tentacles to catch shrimp and worms that emerge under the cover of darkness. With flashlights and trained Naturalists we take the intrepid and curious on an adventure of a lifetime to discover the fascinating world of the reef at night.
Night Submarine When the sun goes down, ocean creatures, coral and colors come out! A submarine adventure is a rare and unforgettable experience that reveals glimpse of fish, exotic corals and a kaleidoscope of colors not seen during the day. From aboard the Atlantis Submarine, join us as we explore the transition of nocturnal creatures coming out to hunt as the daytime fish find a place to sleep.
Reef Survey Snorkel The coral reef is a very fragile ecosystem that is impacted by people every day in a variety of ways. Grand Cayman Island is one of the world’s most popular snorkeling and diving destinations. Take this opportunity to help monitor the health of some of the local coral reefs. Using underwater writing slates, we will use the AGRAA survey method to record the different species of fish, corals and other marine wildlife we encounter. This data will be entered into a worldwide database which monitors the health of planet Earth’s reefs.
Snorkeling Secrets Jean-Michel Cousteau has named Grand Cayman as one of the world’s best snorkeling destinations and our Naturalists have insider knowledge on all the best spots and healthiest reefs. Weather, currents and seasons can all affect the activity on the reef, so on any given day we’ll find the site with the best conditions and most diversity of life.
Underwater Photography Snorkel Learn how to use digital cameras with underwater housings to capture your snorkeling experience. Once we return from our underwater adventure, digitally enhance your favorite shots and use them to create a moving slideshow to take back home.
Underwater Videography Snorkel Make an underwater movie just like Jean-Michel Cousteau. Capture footage while snorkeling along a coral reef. Learn videography fundamentals such as focusing, shot types, framing, moves, story line and shot sequence as you create your own video that you can take home on DVD.
