Founded by the widowed Queen of Portugal in 1557, this convent of barefoot Franciscan nuns contains many rare treasures and one of the most beautiful squares in Madrid. Open Mondays to Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sundays and festivals from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Opened in 1992 by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía, the Centre houses the Permanent Collection of the National Museum and contains the very best of Spain's modern art movement including Salvador Dali, among many others. The origin of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection goes back to the early 20th century, when the grandfather of the Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza started a small collection of art by acquiring various sculptures by Rodin. Since then the collection has grown into one of the most famous in the world. Open: Daily, except Mondays, from 10 a.m – 7 p.m.

Inaugurated in 1856, the Teatro de la Zarzuela is the home of Spanish musical comedy. Part sung, part spoken, these performances embrace the full color and range of Spanish life on stage. The program of performances covers opera and Zarzuela, as well as dance and recitals.

One of Europe's greatest museums, the Prado contains some of Spain's most magnificent works of art. Adjacent to the Hotel Ritz, this is not a museum to be missed, and is worthy of several return visits during your stay. Open Thursday to Saturday from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
