Destination Information

Strategically Located on the Manzanares river, Madrid is the both the capital and largest city in Spain as well as its political and financial center. In the heart of Madrid’s financial district there is the Plaza de la Lealtad, where one can see the Bolsa (built in 1884 and modeled after Vienna’s stock exchange), an obelisk that commemorates the 1908 uprising against Napolean’s French troops, and the Hotel Ritz, which was ceremoniously opened in 1910 by King Alfonso XIII. Settled by the Romans in the 2nd Century B.C. Madrid has been the subject of disputes by many cultures and conquerors. Rome couldn’t defend the city against the Visgoths in the 5th Century A.D. and then Madrid again changed hands by Islamic conquest in the 7th century. Alonso VI reclaimed Madrid for Spain in the 11th century and by the 1700s, Carlos III, one of Spain’s most popular kings, modernized the city, adding the main roads, such as the Paseo del Prado and Paseo las Acacias, which define the city today. Madrid stands as a monument to Spain’s national identity and leads the country in economic and cultural progress. Madrid desires to become an Olympic city and is expected to continue its attempts to host the games. Whether it succeeds in this quest makes little difference to the millions of enthusiastic visitors who come for the gastronomic indulgences, bullfighting, and relaxed refinement that can only be found in Madrid.
